Rules of the 16th international piano competition in Görlitz 2017

(Status 10/24/2016)

 

1. The competition is an international competition.

2. The competition will take place from 13 – 15 January 2017 at the Musikschule J. A. Hiller in Görlitz.

3. The Musikschule J. A. Hiller in Görlitz is responsible for organizing the competition.

4. The participants are the best students of their respective music schools. The competition is open to music students, who do not attend a state music school.

5. Students and groups from the school of a jury member as well as university students may not participate in the competition.

6. The competition will be held in the following categories and age groups:

 

Category:

Piano, solo
Piano, duet (on one or two pianos)
Chamber music with groups of 2-5 participants (here, the piano part should be soloistic or equivalent to the accompaniment).

Age group:

  • I – born in 2009, 2010, and later
  • I b - 2007,2008
  • II - 2005, 2006
  • III - 2003, 2004
  • IV - 2001, 2002
  • V - 1999, 2000
  • VI - 1997, 1998


7. Former 1st place winners may only participate in a higher category

8. The competition is single-stage

9. All performances of the participants will be judged by a jury

10. All participants will receive a certificate of participation

11. Prizes and special prizes will be awarded in the competition for the highest number of points in the groups
The following prizes will be awarded with a minimum number of 20:

  • a prize for the highest number of points in age group Ia
  • a prize for the highest number of points in age group Ib
  • a prize for the highest number of points in age group II
  • a prize for the highest number of points in age group III
  • a prize for the highest number of points in age group IV
  • a prize for the highest number of points in age group V
  • a prize for the highest number of points in age group VI
  • a prize for the highest number of points in the chamber music category
  • a prize for the youngest participant in age group I a
  • a special prize for the best interpretation of a contemporary piece
  • a special prize for the best interpretation of a classical piece
  • a special prize for the best interpretation of a romantic piece
  • a special prize for the best rendition of a piece by J. S. Bach
  • a special prize for the best rendition of a piece by F. Chopin
  • a GRAND PRIX for the highest number of points

 12. The competition is open to the public.

13. The winners of the 1st place prizes and the special prizes are obligated to perform in the winners’ concert (01/15/2017, 3:00 PM).

14. The participants will be personally responsible for all costs for travel, lodging, and meals.

The registration forms can be submitted from 1 - 30 November, 2016.
The number of participants: solo, duet, group (duet or group count as one participant) is limited to 60. If the total of participants is exceeded, the organizers will decide who will participate.

16. Registration is separated by age groups with the following number of participants:

  • Group Ia and Ib - max. 20 participants
  • Group II     - max. 12 participants
  • Group III    - max. 10 participants
  • Group IV     - max. 10 participants
  • Group V and VI - max. 8 participants

17. Each Polish school can send a maximum of 5 participants.

18. The final list of participants will be published online on December 7.

19. The following information must be included in the registration form: playing time, opus, and key. The respective version of the sheet music must be submitted to the jury. The organizers request strict adherence to the time limits listed in the rules.

20. The piano solo program should be played from memory.


Program requirements:

Piano solo

I. and II. age group

  • 3 pieces from different eras, including one baroque piece
    Total duration: I – 5 min; II – 8 min

III. and IV. age group

  • one polyphone piece (baroque)
  • one classical sonatina or sonata (possibly 1st or 2nd and 3rd  movement) or variations any piece from the remaining eras
    Total duration: 10 to 12 minutes

V. and VI. age group

  • one original polyphone piece (baroque)
  • one classical sonatina or sonata (possibly 1st or 2nd and 3rd movement) or variations any piece from the remaining eras
    Total duration: 15 to 20 minutes

Chamber music groups / duet / piano four hands

  • 2 pieces from different eras (including an entire multi-movement piece).

    Total duration: I-II: 6 to 10 minutes
    Total duration: III-IV: 10 to 15 minutes
    Total duration: V-VII: 15 to 20 minutes

 

Additional information:

  • Each participant must pay his/her own expenses with regard to the competition.
  • The 25 € participation fee cannot be refunded.
  • The music school association “Johann Adam Hiller” e.V. Görlitz reserves all video and audio rights.
  • The participants have no financial claim to any TV or radio broadcast of the final concert.
  • The practice rooms will be available starting Friday, 01/13/2017 – 07:00 AM.
